After all, vitamins are vitamins, and dog food is already supplemented with vitamins and minerals. What more could my pet possibly need?

I have been asked a lot of times whether supplementing your pets with multi-vits is it essential and good. Do our pets really need them even if they are on a good brand of dog food? Do our pets really need them if they are on HCF or BARF? Will adding more of these cause more problems in our pets?

Vitamins can improve the quality of your pet's life. They help regulate body processes, protect the body from environmental toxins, and break down nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats so the body can utilize them. Vitamins work with minerals and enzymes for digestion, reproduction, muscle and bone growth, and maintenance of healthy skin and haircoat. But not all multi-vitamins for pets are created equal.

Supplements cannot make up for poor quality of foods, improper or inadequate training and conditioning. Yet, they are necessary for your dog to be healthy and strong.

As for specific vitamins, there are are several that have been found to beneficial.

Vitamin B12: This vitamin, given correctly, as a supplement, improves a dog’s appetite. Dosage should be kept as low as is effective.

Vitamin C: This vitamin in moderate doses may be beneficial in several ways. It helps maintain the immune system and helps dogs fight off infections, especially viral. Vitamin C is also helpful in maintaining the skin. Vitamins C and D work together in a dog to make collagen (a substance that strengthens the tendons and ligaments) and all dogs need vitamin C, just not from a dietary source.

Vitamin E: This vitamin has proven beneficial in two areas, one in helping to maintain good footpads and as a mild anti-inflammatory. Nutritional supplements and vitamins for pets like dogs and cats are crucial to pet health.

Glucosamine and chondroitin: This supplement has proven value if given in combination. This supplement, derived from shellfish, appears to increase the viscosity and volume of synovium (joint fluid). This, in turn, acts as a protective mechanism for the joint surfaces. The best use of this supplement is as a preventative medicine. The most benefit from this application is to start young dogs (2 years) on the supplement and keep them on it.

Glucosamine, Calcium, and Manganese work to help the joints of a dog for deteriorating and strengths overall bone health.

Antioxidants help fend off free radicals that can cause harmful diseases. When a dog is given the correct amount of antioxidants, and supplements in general, their bodies stay healthier longer and they live healthier, happier lives.

Holistic Pet Care Workshop

A Workshop in alternative approaches for your animal’s well-being.

The Holistic Care Introduction workshop is designed to introduce the beliefs and the practices of holism as it applies to our animal companions. This product assists in the digestion and absorption of nutrients which are necessary to maintain good health. It relieves the extra burden placed on the digestive system because this product breaks down fats, carbohydrates, cellulose and protein. This formula replenishes enzymes that are easily destroyed by the normal processing of commercial pet food. Enzyme and probiotic supplementation is a great preventive measure to ensure good health. And this product contains no lactose, sugar or preservatives!

Digestive enzymes are special types of protein molecules that catalyze the breakdown of food into components that can be utilized by the body. These proteins are not stored in the body but are released into the digestive system based on the anticipation, aroma, or actual presence of food. Because they are not stored they must be taken with each meal, preferably with the food. Animal Essentials enzymes contain a blend of plant and microbial produced enzymes, none of which come from animal sources.

Animal derived enzymes will work in only one area of the digestive system, while plant and microbial enzymes work throughout the whole system, from the mouth to the stomach and into the intestines. As the body ages less enzymes are produced, and supplementation is necessary for optimum health. Also, digestive efficiency can be reduced by excitement, anxiety, or stress of any sort (travel, separation, working stress, etc.). Just add 1 tsp. to each cup of moist food for best results for your companion animals (formulated for cats and dogs.) 100g container.

Ingredients: Calcium sulfate, dried fermentation products of: Aspergillus oryzae var., Aspergillus niger var., Bacillus subtilus var., Trichoderma longibrachiatum, pineapple, Bacillus coagulans

Guaranteed analysis:

Per 1 gram (1/4 tsp.)

Moisture (max. 10%)

Alpha & Beta Amylase (aspergillus orzye)* - 3150 DU

Protease (Aspergillus oryzae & bacillus subtilus)* - 20,500 HUT

Lipase (Aspergillus niger)* - 265 LU

Cellulase (Trichoderma longibrachiatum)* - 110 CU

Hemicellulase (Trichoderma longibrachiatum)* - 100 HCU

Bromelain (pineapple)* - 20,000 FCC

Bacillus coagulans (probiotic)* - 600CFU

Natural Calcium Powder for Dogs and Cats by Animal Essentials

Is your cat or dog getting enough calcium and essential minerals? Each teaspoon contains 1000mg of natural calcium as well as other essential minerals. 340g container has around 110 servings.

Supplements facts:

Serving size – 1 teaspoon

Servings per container – 110

Calcium – 1000mg

Magnesium – 100mg

Sulfur – 14mg

Potassium – 3mg

Phosphorous – 24mg

Boron – 75mcg

Zinc – 66mcg

Iodine – 60mcg

Selenium – 3mcg

Aunt Jeni's Allergy Aid

Aunt Jeni's Allergy Aid was specifically formulated by animal nutritionists in response to the many pet allergy related concerns troubling many of our animal companions.

Aunt Jeni's Allergy Aid helps make your animal more resistant to the most common triggers of allergic reactions while helping to give your companion long-term relief from allergies naturally, without dependence upon painful shots or harmful steroids.

A note about allergies

Allergies and skin disorders emanate from the inside of your animal's body. Often times they are treated at the sight of irritation, such as skin or ears. However, you have to address the underlying cause of the problem for long-term healing and relief. Ofter times allergies are related to a sluggish liver, caused by years of vaccinations, use of topical flea and tick poisons, and household and lawn chemical exposure. To help, use a detox formula to help the liver clean out and get healthy. Diet plays a crucial role as well, of course, so sensitive or allergic animals need a natural diet, free of chemical additives and low-cost filler ingredients such as grains.

Aunt Jeni's Allergy Aid Benefits

Aunt Jeni's Allergy Aid contains all-natural vitamin and herbal ingredients known for:

Boosting the immune system

Calming and soothing the skin

Promoting shiny, luxuriant coat growth

Aunt Jeni's Allergy Aid is helpful for animals that suffer from:

dull or brittle hair coat

"the itchies" all over

constant paw-licking

"gunky" ears

runny eyes Aunt Jeni's Allergy Aid Details

Available in a container with 120 chewable tablets.

Aunt Jeni's Pet Allergy Formula Ingredients: (Per chewable tablet)

Vitamin C 250 mg, Ascorbic Acid 100 mg, Calcium Ascorbate 150 mg, liver (desiccated) 200 mg, Anchovy Powder 200 mg, Burdock Root 100 mg, Quercitin 100 mg, Biotin 100 mcg

Does Not Contain: Yeast, Soy, Milk/Dairy, Grain, Wheat, Corn, Sugar, Salt.

Animals Apawthecary Phytomucil

An all natural herbal remedy to relieve symptoms of constipation, diarrhea and gastrointestinal inflammation. Problems only take place when the itching becomes extremely frequent. Severe itchiness is usually a sign of allergies or skin parasites. Itching is such a common issue for dogs and unfortunately there are so many reasons that cause the problem. It's hard to pinpoint the accurate cause.

There are several aspects that may be the beginning of the itching and scratching.

It may be the result of certain allergies that were introduced with frequent vaccinations. It can also be the dog has a poor immune system that may genetics or by stress as a puppy.

Some breeds are prone to zinc deficiencies, which can be not only a cause for itching, but of hair loss as well. Environmental issues can be another cause of the itching and scratching as well. Certain chemicals, detergents, and or fertilizers can cause itching to your dogs too.

Many pet owners think that by purchasing the most expensive dog food, food allergies are not a concern. This is absolutely not the case. Many dry foods contain grains such as wheat, corn, soy and grains which can cause them to scratch and itch even more. Even hypoallergenic diets can contain too many carbohydrates which can lead to yeast overgrowth and your dog continue to scratch and itch. Often food allergies, digestive upset and skin allergies go hand in hand. You need to find the right dog food and nutritional supplements for your dog which without doubt can help with your dog's overall inflammation.

If you are using dry food find one that is grain free, and has good protein sources in them. Some good kibble brands include Innova EVO, Orijen, Honest Kitchen, Addiction Dehydrated Raw Food and Wellness CORE.

For some dogs, a barf diet or home-cooked diet can be the solution but it is not for all dogs. It is important to understand that dogs are carnivores and their anatomy is designed specially to consume fats and animal proteins easily. We recommend that you speak with your holistic veterinarian, holistic consultant or pet nutritionist about your pet's allergies to help you identify the optimal diet. One key point is to be sure you are avoiding all of the following common food allergens: peanut butter, wheat, corn, soy, gluten, milk products--to name just a few.

Over and over again, veterinarians analyze these problems as allergies and propose the pet owner begin a variety of treatments that may include antibiotics, steroids, special prescription diets, topical anti-itching creams (often containing steroids), skin scrapings and dips. Unfortunately, too often there is a relapse of the symptoms soon after the treatments are discontinued. Once again, the owner is back searching for more answers and frequently the same treatments are offered or are given a stronger dose of treatments.

There are certain natural supplements that are beneficial in helping fight against skin allergies. Wholistic Pets Guardians has wonderful products for allergies including Allergy Itch, Super Immune Booster, Skin and Coat and Omega Oils. We do have stronger herbs that are on prescriptions only and we need to look at your dog’s overall conditions before prescribing. But it is important that you also work on eliminating possible allergens from your dog's diet as well to guarantee success. Most important of all, you need a lot of patience and cooperation from all parties.

Contact Me

If you would like to ask me any questions about my products or like to know more about your pet’s conditions, I would love to hear from you.

A PET'S TOP TEN LIFE'S DESIRES.

1. They found him around Bishan 2 days ago. Stayed around the area for about an hour and went around looking for the dog's owner but couldn't find them at all.

My clients brought it home but their shetland could not get along with the maltese. Keep biting the maltese. They tried posting at forums for adoption but no one wants when they see this maltese skin condition. My client call me and ask if I am able to help if not they are going to send him to SPCA. I only have 2 hours (as they only gave me 2 hours) and how am I going to find people to adopt in such a short period of time.

Feeling very say to give up a small life like that, I decided to call them again. THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY TO SPCA!!!!!! OMG!!! I told them to turn back and I tried to foster the maltese for the time being while looking for a owner for this poor fellow. Their children was crying while on the way to SPCA and cried while handing over the maltese to me.

They named this maltese "DASH". He responded. Dash is super friendly with humans. He doesn't bother much with my dogs. He is just on his own. He doesn't seems to be an abused dog. Was recently shaved down by the previous owner, I guess.

I found that he have serious yeast infection on his body, ear and especially his feet. His owner might have give him up because of this. I suspect that he has kidney and bladder problem as his pee is very cloudy yellow. Maybe his previous owner has brought him to the vet for a series of steriods and antibiotics shots before.

Anyone interested to adopt him?

I estimated him to be around 3 - 4 yrs old.

The Swine Flu in a Cat

Posted on AVMA website and their update regarding pets getting H1N1: Wed, 04 Nov 2009

A cat in Iowa has tested positive for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, state officials confirmed this morning, marking the first time a cat has been diagnosed with this strain of influenza.

The cat, which has recovered, is believed to have caught the virus from someone in the householdwho was sick with H1N1. There are no indications that the cat passed the virus on to any other animals or people.

Prior to this diagnosis, the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus had been found in humans, pigs, birds and ferrets.

To date, H1N1 influenza virus infection of pigs has been reported in Canada, Argentina, Singapore, the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland), Ireland, Norway, the U.S. and Japan. It has also been reported in turkeys in Chile and Canada.

Based on the evidence available at this time, the infections were spread from humans to the animals.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) are reminding pet owners that some viruses can pass between people and animals, so this was not an altogether unexpected event. Pet owners should monitor their pets' health very closely, no matter what type of animal, and visit a veterinarian if there are any signs of illness.

The AVMA is actively tracking all instances of H1N1 in animals and posting updates on our Web site at www.avma.org/public_health/influenza/new_virus

By: Courtesy of AVMA

Only available in Wholistic Pets Guardians

Holistic Pets Guardians have brought in many products that is very good and is not available elsewhere. Yeast Infection (Candida Albicans) ?

A yeast infection is caused by a yeast called Candida Albicans. Yeast is a normal part of the digestive tract. Like all yeasts, it thrives on sugars and carbohydrates, which are present in most commercial pet foods.

In healthy dogs, there are beneficial bacteria (such as Lactobacillus acidophilus) that metabolize sugars, thus keeping candida in check by disrupting its food supply. If the system is compromised in some way in the dog's body, it will provide a sugar-rich environment for candida to blossom.

Once there is an excess of candida in the dog's body, it will create a vicious cycle - candida cells produce toxic chemicals that kill beneficial bacteria and damage the body. In addition, waste products produced by candida are toxic chemicals that can slow the brain, causing fatigue and upsetting the immune system.

Once your dog is diagnosed with yeast, it is typically associated with very allergic pets. You may have tried rounds of antibiotics as well as topical creams and yet your dog still keeps itching and getting infections. Pets with yeast infections need to be healed from the inside out.

The end result? A systemic yeast infection in the dog.

If no action is not taken to kill off the single-celled candida, it can convert into a multi-celled fungal form. These cells will eventually penetrate the intestinal wall, diminishing the ability of the intestines to absorb vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids, leading to nutritional deficiencies and a GI problem called "leaky gut syndrome", whereby bacteria, toxins, and undigested food "leak" through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream, causing chronic low-grade infections, inflammation, and autoimmune responses in the form of various kinds of allergies, such as food, environmental, or seasonal allergies.

A common practice is to treat with antibiotics, which does kill some of the candida, but also destroys the beneficial bacteria necessary for proper digestion and body function. Moreover, after the antibiotic treatment is stopped, the overgrowth resumes, causing a vicious cycle that is difficult to reverse.

There are many possibilities that can result in an over-abundance of candida albicans. The most common causes are listed below:

Improper Diet (inadequate protein, too many carbohydrates, no probiotics, digestive enzymes, dietary enzymes, unusable minerals)

Use of Certain Medication (overuse of antibiotics, over vaccinations, medications, tick preparations, heartworm medications)

Physical Health Problems (thyroid problems, hormone stress, inbreeding, illness which compromises the immune system, )

Mental Health Problems (stress, anxiousness, high strung hyperactive dogs, death/loss, change in environment or weather related, change in home or home environment, boarding, sensitivity to stimulus)

Symptoms –

These conditions can be accompanied by a secondary infection, which is what gets treated. On the outside, dog yeast infections look very much like skin irritations and allergies, with symptoms such as:

itchy skin resulting in excessive licking, scratching, and biting

redness or skin rashes, especially on the feet, face, tummy, underarm, or genital areas

recurring hot spots

dry and flaky skin, sometimes the skin may turn black or discolored

hives

bad odor

eczema

itching eyes

hair loss

red, irritated eyes

excessive tearing

coughing

bouts of asthma attacks

frequent sneezing

abnormal nasal discharge

Dog yeast infections may also manifest themselves as:

ear infections

urinary tract infections

bladder infections

food allergies

GI problems, such as bloating and gas, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, etc.

bad breath

anal sac problems

joint pain

malnutrition due to inability to absorb sufficient nutrients

fatigue and lethargy

With so many symptoms impersonate so many different dog diseases, you can imagine that sometimes even veterinarians may misdiagnose a case of dog yeast infection as something else - very often, the secondary disease caused by the yeast infection (e.g. urinary infection) will be diagnosed, but the root cause (i.e. the yeast infection) will not. As such, localized treatment is given to cure the secondary disease (in this case, urinary infection) without addressing the underlying root cause.

If your dog unfortunately suffers from recurring infections (be it skin, ear, or others) or has allergies (skin or food) that do not seem to go away, dog candida may be the culprit.

Can we try to return the health back to your dog? The answer is YES - we can fix or reverse this mess, it takes time, patience and you changing some of the feeding practice with your pet. Prevention is the cure.

Major symptoms of a yeast infection surface in the shape of skin rashes, itching, redness, pimples and sometimes greasiness. A veterinarian will use a microscope, take a culture of skin scrapings or conduct a smear test to confirm the diagnosis. Itching induced by a yeast infection further leads to skin damage. If not attended to in time, this may lead to hair loss and further complications that may become difficult to handle.

Usually, a yeast infection is caused by some medical condition that has rendered the immune system incapable of functioning properly. Treatment with antibiotics, steroids, and other conventional drugs may bring temporary relief, but the patient soon returns with another flare-up, and symptoms progress. Topical treatments are not very effective as the dog is prone to lick them off. But many antifungal drugs have potentially serious side effects and they produce only temporary results. As soon as the prescription ends, surviving candida cells multiply, re-colonize, and activate another series of symptoms.

Shampoos containing antifungal agents in the form of a nitrate can help in treatment but only to a certain extent. Always bathe with a cleansing shampoo first. Cleansing shampoo is able to help clean out the body clean very effectively. Thereafter use a natural shampoo to help with the skin.

A natural approach to health is always better than choosing medication. Effective ways of preventing yeast infection include a healthy, balanced and nutritional diet, avoiding commercial dog foods, and keeping the dog dry whenever he gets wet.

Removing carbohydrates is the first step; the second step involves destroying the candida organism. This can be done by adding coconut oil to your dog’s food. For best results, begin with a small amount and gradually increase to the optimum dose. Dogs with yeast infection may need more, especially in the early stages of treatment. It is important to provide plenty of drinking water during this time to help flush out the toxins.

About two weeks after this treatment is started, it is very important to start rebuilding the beneficial stomach bacteria. Beneficial bacteria form a first line of defense against pathogens. Probiotics are popular treatments for Candida infections, but proper timing is important.

Yeast infection can be a very frustrating disease that takes a lot of commitment on your part. Following our program is not easy for many, however, when the yeast is under control, owners report considerable improvement and a new positive lifestyle for their dog.

*A consultation is highly recommended before any preventative treatment is started.

Until we meet again, my Baby Girl!

Zhuzhu, you were with 2 other owners before you came to me. I only know you were around 6 years old.

You came to me shaven down because your previous owner says you were dirty and you need to nurse your babies. You were given away because they didn’t want to continue using you as their breeding bitch anymore.

In my house, beside me there are only my other 2 dogs, Boyboy (Short-coated Chihuahua) and Sugar (Long-haired Chihuahua). I want to remember all your funny antics and the way you showed me that you loved Boyboy, Sugar and Me.

Nothing can compare to the unconditional love and service that you have given me although its only a short period of 2 year plus.

You are always wagging your tail no matter what’s going on around you.

You always like to face the wall. Maybe you think there is someone there.

You had the softest hair I ever felt.

You have the sweetest face I ever see.

You hardly bark and are always lying around sleeping or follows everywhere I go in the house. It is just the house seems so strange without you.

When I left for work, I will bring you along. You will always sit there quietly and patiently waiting for me and wagging tails at my customers. I am very sure you have heard how many HUMANS said you are beautiful and lovely.

You hate bathing time. But when I have to bathe you, you never move around. You doesn't move around even I blow-dry your body. You don't move around when I brush your hair or when I want to groom you.

You are always the sweetest girl, happy to have anyone hold you, happy to be petted and paid attention. It was your favorite thing.

When it’s time for you to have your meals, you will always follow me around the kitchen to see what I am cooking for you. You just know that I am cooking for you.

You hate it when it’s raining and will always hides in a corner. When thunder strike, you will always walk around and squeeze to anywhere you can squeeze.

You hate it when I have to feed you medications. But you still cooperate with me and you took down each and every herbal medication that I give you.

You are always playing with Sugar. Running around the house with her. Chasing after one another. Always banging into things. You were so happy.

I know you have to go. I know. But I just couldn’t bear to let go of you. Which is why I keep trying and trying to extend your life staying with me. But I just couldn’t fight with the God of Death. Although over the years, many vets and friends told me to let you go, but I just keep hanging on. I have brought you back from going to the rainbow bridge so many times. I know it’s very tiring but seeing you gaining back your health each time you falls down, makes me so happy and relax.

From 26 September 2009 to 28 September 2009, you were so sick that you didn’t want to move and eat. I kept asking you if you would like to be with me longer, and if you want, walk for me and eat a bit.

YOU DID!!!! Each time I ask you, YOU DID!!!

You went to pee. You ate a bit. I know you totally have no more strength. I know. You couldn’t stand for long. I know you did it just for me and makes me smile.

I hugged you to sleep. On 29 September 2009, you left me on my arms. You looked at me. Boyboy and Sugar by your side. They know you have left them. They sat quietly and staring at you.

Zhuzhu, you will be in my heart forever. Thank you for being such a wonderful and faithful companion to me for almost 3 years. I love you more than I ever thought was possible to love a friend, and I will miss you every day. You are more than a friend to me. You are like my human daughter that it’s my responsibility to take care of you regardless of you being healthy or not. I’ll remember how you love me. I’ll remember how much joy you have given me.

I know you are not in heaven but waiting for me, for Boyboy and Sugar at the Rainbow Bridge. I know you saw my few other dogs who have passed on. I know you are playing with Baby (Yorkshire Terrier), Takky (Yorkshire Terrier) and Princess (Chihuahua).

It comforts me to know you are out of pain now and basking in the warm sun whenever you want to and playing happily.

I love you, my girl.

Thanks for being a part of our lives, little girl.

I will see you later.

Heart totally sank

I have a Shih Tzu by the name of Zhuzhu. Do you spend time and money at the veterinarian's clinic trying to bring relief to your beloved pet, only to find that another infection appears after a while? If so, you may want to try some more natural approaches to preventing and treating your pet's ear infections.

Dogs and cats have an incredible sense of hearing. To protect their hearing and prevent damage to the ear drum, their ear canals are L-shaped. The problem with this is that it allows the ears to trap parasites, moisture, debris, and earwax, and any of these can lead to ear infections.

Out of 10 dogs that come to me for grooming and holistic consult, I often have to tell 9 of my customers that their dog’s ears are infected. Many of them don’t even clean their dog’s ears and some leave it to the maid to do it. Ear infections are very common amongst cats and dogs and can cause severe irritation and discomfort in your beloved pet. All dog owners have to be well-informed about this disease.

There are three types of ear infection in dogs – the outer ear infection, middle ear infection, and the inner ear infection. It is easy to know if your dog has an outer ear infection. You'll often see the symptoms of this disease, which is usually characterized by inflammation, red and smelly.

Usually, an ear infection in dogs starts out as something like smelly dog ears, or you notice that your dog is scratching his ears continuously. This may be a telltale sign of an outer ear infection. If left untreated, the problem may go deeper and may develop into middle ear infection or even inner ear infection; sometimes causing severe damage to the hearing of our dogs. It is, therefore, always recommended that we seek treatment instead of letting the infection run their course.

Like any other diseases, prevention is the key. Ear infection in dogs can be caused by a lot of factors. To prevent ear infection in dogs, we need to know the various possible causes and then we can do our utmost to eliminate such causes.

Here are some common causes of ear infection in dogs:

Bacteria and yeast

Allergies

Dog Ear Mites

Foreign bodies

Hormonal Imbalance

Common signs of an ear infection include:

Shaking of the head and ears

Excessive scratching or rubbing the ears and face

Thick discharge or even bleeding from the ears

Foul smell coming from the ears

Pain, sensitive, sometimes swollen ear

Overall changes in behavior including depression, tiredness and irritability

Before trying any form of treatment for ear infection, it is important that a proper diagnosis by the vet is obtained. Make sure that there are no foreign bodies inside your dog's ear. Brown waxy debris and other signs of infection could be caused by bacteria, by a fungus, or by ear mites. Without knowing exactly what the primary cause is, at the end of the day the infection will be sure to worsen. Appropriate treatment can only begin after a vet makes an accurate diagnosis. Check with your veterinarian / holistic practitioner before using any home remedies, and always get a diagnosis before applying treatments. Since dogs can get different types of ear infections, always have your dog's ears checked before using any medications.

Here are some tips to prevent ear infection in dogs:

Feed your dog a natural diet with the correct supplements and vitamins.

Strengthen your dog's immune system using natural supplements.

Keep water out of your dog's ears as it tends to be a breeding ground for bacteria.

For long hair dogs, make sure that you pluck out any excessive hair. Short hair dogs usually don’t have any excessive hair growing out but when you bathe your dog make sure you dry the ear properly.

Make it a point to check your dog's ears at least once a week for signs of infection and be prepared to act quickly in case of infection.

Clean your dog's ears regularly and do not use water to clean.

There are a few solutions that we can use natural remedies to deal with the nasty ear infection. Just remember, don' wait till it becomes worst. By then, it might take a longer time to recover.

Why is My Dog's Poop Red?

Note: A black tarry stool indicates bleeding from the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine. Bright red blood in the stool indicates that the source of bleeding is in the lower gastrointestinal tract (colon or rectum).

Seeing your dog’s poo a puddle of blood can be a quite scary event, perhaps mainly because we most usually associate it with cancer, but luckily in dogs the causes may be a lot less dramatic.

Bloody stools often occur as a result of something that does not agree with your dog or cat’s stomach. There are several reasons that your dog might have bloody stool. The presence of bloody stools may be a symptom of either a minor problem, or a potentially more serious problem in the animal. One episode of bloody stools may be a minor and temporary incident. Repeated or persistent bloody stools are more serious and should not be ignored.

Below are some of the most common reasons given by various veterinarians:

Infectious agents, such as bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and intestinal parasites

Dietary intolerance/allergy/indiscretion

Cancer of the lower bowel

Benign masses in the colon or rectum

Digestive related disorders, such as colitis, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disorder, stomach ulcer, and pancreatitis

Trauma to the lower bowel or anal area

Clotting disorders coagulopathy

Viral, fungal or bacterial infections

Liver or kidney failure

What to Watch For

Bright red blood in the feces

Possible straining to defecate

Increased number of bowel movements produced

Possibly no other clinical signs

Possibly other systemic signs of illness, such as excessive drinking, urinating, vomiting and diarrhea, lethargy, poor appetite, weight loss

Natural Remedies Treatments

Natural remedies are often a healthier, gentler alternative to treating bloody stools than conventional medications. Not only does it protect the stomach and reduces the bacterial, it does help with the dog’s overall system to build up its immunity.

Bloody stools are not healthy or normal, and it is definitely a cause for concern!

How can Probiotics help my pet?

Many holistic veterinarians / practitioners believe that imbalances in intestinal bacteria are a major reason in many of the chronic disorders that we see in our pets today. Our own experience with cats and dogs, and even their people, shows us this is very true!

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria, the “good” or “friendly” bacteria that inhabit the entire digestive tract and play an important role in digestion, nutrient assimilation and immune system function.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria and yeast, and are used to restore the normal balance of microflora (bacteria) in the gastrointestinal tract. In other words, probiotics are the "good, friendly bacteria" that are used to combat the "bad, harmful bacteria" that have grown out of proportion due to numerous reasons.

What are some of the roles probiotics play in the body?

1) Produce natural antibiotics, which can fight harmful bacteria.
2) Regulate and increase hormone levels.
3) Manufacture B group vitamins, biotin and folic acid.
4) Stimulate the immune system.
5) Reduce food intolerance.
6) Increase energy levels.
7) Inhibit the growth of some yeast.
8) Absorb nutrients, antioxidants and iron from food that is eaten.
9) Reduce inflammation.
10) Increase digestibility of food.

Several things can destroy the intestinal bacterial balance in a pet’s gut. The conventional treatment of infection is to use antibiotics / steroids / NSAIDs , which are like nuclear bombs to bacteria - they kill both good and bad indiscriminately. Moreover, stress, poor diet, artificial ingredients, acute and chronic diarrhea, pollutants, environmental changes, and prescription drugs can also reduce the levels of beneficial bacteria.

An imbalance between friendly and unfriendly bacteria in the pet’s body plays a role in many of the chronic disorders we see in our pets today.

Symptoms can include:-

1) bad breath,
2) bloating,
3) diarrhea,
4) constipation,
5) vomiting,
6) excessive gas,
7) foul smelling stool,
8) allergies,
9) autoimmune disease,
10) skin conditions,
11) blood clotting problems,
12) low bone density,
13) asthma,
14) migraines,
15) anxiety,
16) depression,
17) urinary incontinence,
18) lowered blood pressure,
19) abnormal gait,
20) tingling of nerves,
21) lowered uric acid levels,
22) lowered hydrochloric acid levels,
23) irritable bowel syndrome,
24) celiac disease,
25) dairy intolerance,
26) vaginal infection,
27) yeast infection,
28) bladder infection and
29) sinus infections.

Pets with large amounts of beneficial bacteria are better prepared to fight the growth of unhealthy organisms. So, if pets are to maintain a healthy body, they need large quantities of friendly bacteria. Supplement a well-balanced diet with a high quality probiotic and give your pet the health that he most certainly deserves.

Why is my dog scratching so much?

"Over 80% of my cases are dogs that scratch excessively. These dogs may have an itchy rash, they may have hair loss from scratching, or they may just scratch incessantly.

One of the most common problems presented to all veterinarians is the “itchy” pet, and as a holistic practitioner, the same holds true for me too. Most often the source of itch is allergies. With conventional medicine, the treatment is often to suppress and in chronic cases this can mean endless rounds of antibiotics and steroids.

So if it is so common, there must be effective treatments out there, right? Causes of dog itchy skin include parasites, allergens and skin infections and there are treatments for each one. Common treatment recommendations will be given when possible, but given the difficult nature of these situations, treatments often need to be individual patient based to be effective.

Allergies can be due to parasites, bacterial infection, fungal infections, food or the environment. All of these conditions can look very similar to each other as well to other disease processes that affect the skin. Method of figuring out accurately what your dog is sensitive to can be tricky. These conditions are not mutually exclusive, and often a bacterial infection is actually caused by an underlying problem such as allergies.

There are different types of skin infections that can affect your dog. Try to remember that your dog may react uniquely to a certain skin disease or may be suffering from a combination of a few skin conditions.

I do encourage my clients to work up the root of the allergy. If an allergen can be identified, a change in environment can improve the situation and certainly changing the diet is far simpler and better for your pet than forever fighting an allergy to the chicken you feed each day.

One of the main causes of dog skin disease is bacterial and yeast infections. These can cause excessive scratching and are usually brought on when a dog’s immune system is low because of stress, illness or hypersensitivity.

Herbs and nutritional supplements designed to alleviate the itchy skin and support skin health are another step in the treatment program for chronic allergies. This can help relieve the stress caused by the discomfort, which is supportive of immune function and healing. In addition, reducing the itch helps in the reduction of secondary infections and allows the skin to heal.

Natural treatments do take more time and effort than a course of antibiotics or steroid treatment. The long-term health and well-being of our pets, however, will be far enhanced by treating the pet’s entire system and the underlying cause of the itch, not just the symptoms.

Perseverance in treating the itchiness topically while you are addressing the underlying causes through diet and supplements will significantly promote your pet’s ability to heal and lessen his trauma as well. Secondary infections caused by persistent scratching, licking or biting make matters worse and slow the healing process, and topical treatment can help prevent this.

About Natural Medicines

What if my pet is taking drugs?

This is one of the many questions that most of the pet owners often ask me.

If your pet is on antibiotics or steroids to curb skin inflammation problems, you can still start giving them the natural healing skin and detox remedies now.

In other instances when taking drugs, natural medicines can be given at the same time, which is highly recommended for healing rather than maintaining a condition with conventional medicines. Of course veterinarian checkups and monitoring the development of your pet’s conditions is important, as well as gradually reducing/stopping drugs.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy (home-ee-AH-puh-thee) is the branch of medicine which is based on the principle that disease can be cured by strengthening the body’s natural defense mechanism. This is in contrast to traditional (allopathic) medicine which uses drugs to suppress symptoms (which are the visible result of the body’s attempt to heal itself).

Similia Similibus Curentur — "Like Cures Like." Any substance which can produce a totality of symptoms in a healthy human being can cure that totality of symptoms in a sick human being.

Unlike drugs, homeopathic remedies don't directly attack the disease or condition. Instead, these substances trigger the body's own self regulation and self healing functions. They stimulate the body to cure itself.

The goal of homeopathic treatment is to achieve the highest possible level of health.Homeopathy does have important limitations however. Because it relies on the natural healing abilities of the body, advanced organ pathology such as cancer or crippling arthritis, which involve changes in the structure of the body, can rarely be fully reversed. The animals who suffer from such conditions will often however be helped to become stronger and more comfortable and have a better quality of life. In addition, surgical intervention is still required when appropriate (such as for traumatic diseases).

What are Traditional Chinese Medicines?

Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) is probably the oldest medicine for people, and by extension, for animals. I will begin by stating that you should not attempt herbal healing for your pet unless you have a good understanding of what makes your pet in poor health. And most important is to have a good understanding of the healing herbs. Don't guess.....check with your veterinarian what is wrong with your pet first!

It is unwise to presume that herbs alone are used to treat ill-health in our pets. Most holistic veterinarians/practitioners recommend nutritional support in addition to conventional therapy if the problem is acute, severe or life threatening. This integrated approach is designed to give the animal patient the greatest amount of comfort combined with the gentlest and most supportive treatments.

Herbs are naturally designed to work with body functions, not against them. For instance, antibiotics essentially bypass (and often destroy) the body’s natural immune system while achieving their goals through microscopic assassination. Echinacea on the other hand, stimulates natural auto-immune responses while leaving the immune system intact. The natural immune system then works more efficiently at what it is designed to do… it enables the body to heal itself through complex mechanisms that modern science has barely begun to understand.

Rather than just treating the signs or expression of a disease, using the TCM system as a whole enables a practitioner to identify and treat the underlying causes of disease.

TCM Herbs: -

a) Can serve as tonics and builders that strengthen organs, glands and tissues in specific parts of the body, like strengthening the heart, or aiding digestion;

b) Assist in the healing process by helping the body to eliminate toxins, thus helping to take care of the problem the symptoms are expressing, for example, they may stimulate physiological processes like the emptying of the bowels or bladder or cleansing of the liver.

Many herbs contribute their own rich sources of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Unlike many high-potency vitamin supplements that have the potential to burden the body with excess nutrients, herbs do not place added burden upon the liver, kidneys and digestive system. Instead, herbs provide their nutritional values in food-like form that the body can freely digest and utilize.

To end: -

In holistic medicine, “good health” is viewed as “the maintenance of proper balance” within a complex, finely tuned, intricately related unification of all which comprises a living body.

Why Dog Health and Grooming Go Hand in Hand?

Pet grooming and their health are closely associated because this is a perfect chance to examine past their big eyes and the fluffy body. When you groom, you get to see what is underneath those hair.

While grooming your dog you are engaging in a hands on project and at the same time its where both your relationship increase and trust. During this time you can check for lumps, warts, and any other abnormality on their body.

When you do try to clip your dog's nails, you are able to see the bottoms of his feet to check if he has any broken nails or even any problems with his paw pads. A lot of owners always miss this infection which can turn out to be serious.

While cleaning his ears with a ear solution (never use water), if you notice any unusual smell or discharge, you should send your dog to the vet for a thorough check. Don't leave it unattended. It can become serious and can either cause your dog to become deaf or ears swollen.

Drying your dog should be a time of observation. This is the time when you will be able to see if your dog's skin has any puncture wounds, cuts and abrasions, infections and also for fleas and ticks.

Grooming your puppy or your adult dog, you are also teaching them that its a wonderful process. The more you teach your dog and giving lots of praise, the more attractive he will become.

When we look at our pets, they are full of hairs everywhere but if we look closer we may see much more that relates to their health. In return, this can help us to reduce a lot of vet trips.

Why Going Natural and Holistic for Your Pet Matters More Now than Ever!

Whether out of concern for the environment or for the benefits of better well-being, it seems as though everyone is going natural these days. A shift to more environmentally-friendly and healthier ways of living is "green and growing" (sorry-I couldn't resist!) This trend has even extended our focus to all natural pet care and for good reason.

Massive recalls of pet food in late 2006 and into 2007 have led pet owners to question the safety of their pets' diets. This concern led to another obvious question-"Would more natural products without all the unnecessary chemicals be better for my pet?"

The answer is overall-yes! Experts have told us natural products and foods can be much safer and promote well-being unlike their highly-processed, "who-knows-what's-in-it" counterparts on the market. The challenge is knowing what "natural" products truly are that-natural- and which products use the term liberally to describe ingredients that are far from natural.

My objective is to resolve some of the confusion and questions regarding terms used in marketing pet products, while educating you on naturally healthy solutions for you and your pet that are cost-effective, too.

My dear pet friends, tell us what you think and give us feedback.

Holistic : definition

I know many of you spend a lot of money to buy a dog or a cat. Many of you treat them as part of your family members. Many of you also treat them like your own kids. But are you giving the right stuffs to your "family member"? They need correct food, vitamins, supplements, tonic, grooming, and exercise.

But just what is the "Correct" definition of Holistic?

Here is a definition of what Holistic meant.

Holistic : definition

hol.lis.tic 1. Pertaining to the theory that whole entities are more than the sum of their parts. 2. Of or using that consider one's total state, mind, body and spirit in the treatment of disease.

How does the word holistic apply to medicine? The Canadian Holistic Medical Association defines Holistic Medicine this way:

Holistic medicine is a system of health care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health.

It emphasizes the need to look at the whole person (dogs in our case), including analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values. It encompasses all stated modalities of diagnosis and treatment including drugs and surgery if no safe alternative exists. Holistic medicine focuses on education and responsibility for personal efforts to achieve balance and well being.

Holistic medicine is more popular than ever. Many people are fed up with the failures of conventional medicine and the dangers of modern drugs. They have begun to look elsewhere for health and healing. More and more people are discovering the benefits of holistic medicine and are now starting to consider these same benefits for their pets. What's making the difference? Why are pets that are treated holistically reaching new heights of wellness where conventional medicine has failed them? Seemingly chronic health problems and incurable diseases from the conventional perspective are now being cured by holistic methods. Consider these key points:

Conventional medicine sees a dog as a collection of parts - a heart, a liver, a kidney. Holistic medicine sees a whole dog, with a body, mind and spirit.

Conventional medicine tends to rely on drugs for better health. Holistic medicine relies on proper nutrition to boost the bodies own natural resistance to disease. The focus is on stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Conventional medicine focuses on treating symptoms. This may offer a quick fix but it does nothing to address or affect the underlying problem. When symptoms are suppressed and the real problem is not addressed the disease may actually emerge again later in the same form or worse yet in a more debilitating manner. Holistic treatments focus on the whole individual. It sees a disease as the body's way of manifesting an imbalance and the only way to regain balance is to address the entire individual. The aim of holistic medicine is to nourish the body, mind, spirit and its natural tendency for health. Instead of the quick fix, the body will experience a more permanent improvement while always moving towards a higher state of health. Conventional medicine often involves some type of drug therapy that tends to create side effects which can undermine overall health. Holistic medicine offers natural remedies that the body can more easily accept therefore not creating harmful side effects.

Conventional medicine will attempt to fight off disease once it occurs. Treatment is sought only after an illness manifests. There is no emphasis on preventative treatment. A holistic approach will aim to support overall health in order to prevent a disease from developing in the first place.

Conventional medicine is very rigid in its diagnosis and treatments. There is little room if any for alternative approaches. In the true spirit of holistic medicine any and all avenues of treatment will be considered when determining the best approach for an individual patient. Therefore, holistic medicine does not exclude conventional treatments such as surgery if no safe alternative exists.

Holistic care for animals is on the rise. We may not have been taught holistic principles or raised with them, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't adopt them if they provide our pets with a healthier life. We shouldn't let tradition or fear determine our choices. We have been taught by the current medical establishment that we have no control over our healthcare decisions.

Don't believe it. You do have choices and when faced with the choice of preventing a disease or treating a disease which would you choose? Taking a holistic approach means being responsible and proactive. It means becoming an active participant in your dog's healthcare. You do that by gathering the necessary information to make an informed decision as to which form of treatment will potentially work best for your pet. This may be uncomfortable for you at first but you'll be surprised and grateful for the results you'll achieve.

If you do have any problems with your pet and that you need to consult a Holistic Veterinarian, please do go ahead and see what's the alternative options are. Options are for us to choose and make it better.

Wholistic Pet's Guardians Mission and Pledge

Welcome to Wholistic Pet's Guardian

We want to acknowledge you for having an open mind and for looking into alternative and holistic treatment for your beloved furry family member. As more and more people realise that conventional medicines can have serious side effects they are turning to a more natural approach to healthcare both for themselves and their animals. In fact the holistic approach to health is a rapidly expanding field.

I have been an animal lover all my life as far as i can remember, I started out as a Pet Groomer and 8 years ago started out to learn more about alternative treatments for pets. I've had dogs all my life - I have a Shih Tzu and 2 Chihuahuas now. I'm also a Naturopath Pet Practitioner, and also do therapies for animals.

I now try to look after my animals in as natural a way as possible and use Homeopathy Remedies , Herbal Remedies, Chinese Herbs, Flower Remedies, Acupressure and Kinesiology.

Why I created Wholistic Pet's Guardians & what I hope you get from them? Honestly, I’m not sure. I mean, I really have done a great deal of research and get myself certified on health topics especially alternative health. So in one sense, I’m writing about what I know about & am passionate about helping your pets!

The products I recommend are all as natural as possible, and they don't contain chemical preservatives. Some companies advertise their products as “natural” when they are anything but, so it pays to do your homework. I believe a lot of health problems can be avoided by making sure we don’t use harmful chemicals and as our pet's guardians it is our responsibility find out exactly what we are putting in and on our pets.

Why not help your animals regain the natural balance necessary for good health!

I hope you enjoy browsing through my blog to gain more knowledge on how you can help your pet to live better and healthier. You are also welcome any comments that are good or bad which may help us improve our service to you. If you are looking for a certain product but don't see it on the website feel free to contact us as we may be able to obtain it for you.

Best Regards,
Bryan Chow, Pet Naturopathy Practitioner and Therapist

My 1st time blogging !!

Well, I must say for the first time in my life I am blogging about my daily life with dogs and cats. Have been grooming pets for so many years and went into holistic treatment few years ago, this is really a major change in my life.

Pet Holistic Treatment is growing very slowly in Singapore. I am hoping more owners will come and accept this form of treatment for their pets. Trying very hard to convey the message out daily to every owners who walk into my salon/clinic.

Everyday, I am faced with owners not sure what to do with their pets. A lot of dogs who comes to me either through recommendations from friends or who happens to walk pass my shop, to a certain extend they are shocked to hear that there are holistic treatments for pets. Out of 10 ppl, I would say there are 9 who hear it for the first time.

When I does my grooming, usually will see some skin problems in the dogs and cats. Most of the time, I will ask the pet owner what happens to their pet or has they visit the conventional veterinarians for any help. Most say yes but stopped going because it doesn't seems to help the poor fellow at all. Some didn't even know that their pet have problems.

When I tried explaining about their pet's conditions, most of them will listen. Some of them will get what I advise them. Some of them will say I am just trying to earn their money. Some of them will say they will bring their pet to the vet but never. Some say premium products are just so expensive and they don't have the money to spend on all these for their pets.

Sometimes I wonder why they keep a pet. Maybe there really is a different between a "pet lover" and a "pet owner"!
